Open Question: what is psychology and what do psychologists do? Are they like therapists?

I have always thought that i wanted to be a doctor because my mom wants me to be a doctor but now im freshman n im looking at other stuff n im curious about psychology...what is it? what do psychologists do? what r good colleges for psychology? R there different types of it? what r the different types?
